Welcome to the first weekend wrap of 2014. Finally the PGA Tour is back in action after a long, honestly boring, winter break.
This past weekend’s event was held at the beautiful Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii. Kapalua is well known for being a course which favors the big hitters, which is exactly why Zach Johnson is your 2014 champion.
Wait. What?
Zach Johnson is far from a big hitter. So how did he manage to overtake three players who were two shots ahead of him going into the final round? Laser precision with the driver and irons. For the tournament Johnson hit 77.8 percent of his greens in regulation and 83.3 percent of his fairways. Johnson’s driving distance of 267.1 yards was good enough for what seems to be a respectable 23rd place, until one realizes this field had only 30 players.
Johnson is arguably the hottest golfer on the planet right now, barring a slight argument for Henrik Stenson. Johnson is 2-for-2 in his last two starts, and has now reached 11 career wins on the PGA Tour.
Next up the Tour stays in Hawaii for the Sony Open at Waialae Country club. Johnson should be a favorite there as he won the tournament back in 2009.
