PGA Results: 2012 PGA Tour was in Georgia
PGA Tour
The PGA Tour was in Sea Island Georgia this past week to contest the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island's Seaside Course. On the line this past week are some big stakes for up and comers and those players vying for their 2013 PGA Tour cards.
Coming into the final round two veteran players and likely hall-of-famers were in the final pairing, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk. Furyk was looking for a win to help make up for the year's meltdowns, while Love was hoping for a win to sooth the sting of losing the Ryder Cup in historic fashion. Which one would come home with the victory? None of the above.
Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, known as "two gloves" for the fact that he wears two black gloves on the course and even while putting, came into the final round seven shots off the lead. After five full season on Tour, Gainey had yet to record a victory. You may recall, Gainey was a two-time competitor on Golf Channel's "Big Break" TV show, winning his 2nd appearance in 2006 at Big Break VII: Reunion.
Gainey caught fire Sunday like never before. He scored a -10 round 60 (par-70) and was three inches from recording the first 59 on Tour in two years. The 60 leapfrogged Gainey past Furyk and Love for his first PGA Tour win. Highlighting his round was a sequence of seven straight 3's on his back nine.
LPGA Tour
The ladies were in South Korea this past week at the LPGA KEB HanaBank Championship. This event was played on the Sky 72 Golf Club Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus design.
Suzann Petterssen of Norway is most recently known for posing nude in ESPN's Body issue. But she has more game than meets the eye. Pettersen finished regulation tied with Catriona Matthew. The two entered a sudden-death playoff which lasted three holes. On the 3rd playoff hole, Pettersen drained a 5-foot birdie putt to seal her 9th career victory.
With the victory, Pettersen increased her LPGA earnings to over $9 million, moving into 9th on the LPGA Career Money List.
Web.com Tour
With the conclusion of last week's Winn-Dixie Championship where Russell Henley recorded his 2nd Web.com Tour victory, the final field for the Web.com Tour Championship is set. In the Web.com Tour Championship the field of 60 competes for the top 25 positions which will earn them playing priveleges on the PGA Tour for 2013. This intense tournament will take pace this week and should be some great viewing. Stay tuned for Thursday's "weekend preview" for more info and TV times.
Here's the list of the top 60 on PGATour.com who will be competing for the top 25 slots.
