PGA Results: 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs (Round Two)
What a fantastic Labor Day weekend of golf it was, with the 2nd round of the FedEx Cup playoffs taking place in Boston at TPC Boston. This week's FedEx Cup playoff action narrowed the field down from 100 to 70 players.
Tiger Woods started out the tournament this week with a brilliant first round 64. But the course was so "get-able" as the players called it, that he found himself two shots off the lead and behind two players as Chris Kirk shot a 63 and Soon-Yul No blistered the course with a 62. Tiger would be close to the lead through the weekend, not faltering in the final two rounds like he has recently. He'd finish in a solid 3rd.
Louis Oosthuizen came into the 3rd round behind Rory McIlory but fired an incredible 63 which included seven straight birdies. That fine round vaulted him three shots ahead of McIlory for the final round and looking good. Could his hot putting and great ball striking continue in the final round, enough to give him his first PGA Tour win or would McIlory come from behind? There's a reason why McIlory is ranked #1.
Rory McIlory came into the final round three shots behind Oosthuizen, but fired a solid final round 67 as compared to Oosthuizen's 71. The one shot victory further solidifies McIlory's #1 ranking as well as putting him him the #1 position in FedEx Cup points. For good measure, McIlory also leads the PGA and European Tour money lists, a la last year's feat by Luke Donald.
There's no time to celebrate though, as McIlroy and the top 70 in FedEx Cup points are heading to the BMW Championship, round three of the playoffs.
Notable players who missed the top 70 and are out of the FedEx Cup race: Jason Day, Ricky Barnes, David Toms, K.J. Choi, Gary Woodland, Retief Goosen.
