PGA Results: 2011 Farmer's Insurance Open
If you are a golf fan, yesterday's final round play by the last few groups at the Farmer's Insurance Open was about as good as it gets. If you are a Tiger Woods fan, the play was not as good as it gets. Not even close.
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods looked to be getting his game back after some decent Thursday and Friday rounds at Torrey, 69 and 69 respectively. The first 69 Friday however, was on the easier North course. But finishing the weekend in 74-75 on Saturday and Sunday left him way back in the pack, tied for 44th place.
Jhonattan Vegas
"Johnny Vegas" is trying to wrap up rookie of the year on the PGA Tour in his first month on tour. Vegas shined through the tournament and was a big factor on Sunday. He had a chance to challenge eventual winner Bubba Watson but his 5-iron came up short on the final hole. The watery grave for Vegas' ball on the par-5 18th meant he'd have to settle for a tie for 3rd place with Dustin Johnson.
If Vegas' performance in the first few weeks of this season is an indicator of things to come, he could be a top five player very soon.
Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson had an up-and-down round Sunday at Torrey, firing six birdies but dropping three shots with three bogeys. Phil shared the lead or was within one shot of the lead much of the day, in the group behind Bubba Watson.
Phil needed eagle on the 18th hole to tie Watson and force a playoff. In an un-Phil like move, he laid up on the par-5 as his drive was in heavy rough on the left side of the hole. Knowing he had to hole out his 3rd shot from 72 yards, Phil had his caddy "Bones" tend the flag stick in a very dramatic and fun move to watch.
Phil's 72 yard shot hit just about 6-8 inches left of the hole, bounced forward and nearly spun back into the hole. Though it didn't go in, it was still one of the most incredible shots this Frog has seen in a pressure filled situation on a huge stage like the 18th at Torrey on Sunday.
Phil's easy birdie on the final hole would give him solo 2nd place.
Bubba Watson
Bubba Watson was fun to watch all day. He was blasting drives 340-plus and shaping large hooks and slices on every shot. He was calm and in control down the stretch.
On the 18th hole, Bubba pulled his 2nd shot into the left greenside bunker. A brilliant bunker shot hit the back tier of the green and rolled down to make-able birdie range. The putt was very fast and easy to fly by the hole, but Watson's putting touch was perfect and he made birdie. That birdie was the difference between a playoff with Phil Mickelson and his 2nd win on the PGA Tour.
Season So Far
This season has been terrific to watch as a golf fan. It just gets better too. This week the Tour is in the most crazy and loud venue of the season in Phoenix. If you haven't been tuning in, I'd recommend you start this week.
