Golf Tips: Lining Up Your Tee Shot

Where would you tee up on this hole?[/caption]
On the tee box most amateur golfers tee up their ball in the middle and hit their shot without thinking much about it. The tee is the beginning of the hole, and the place where the strategy of the hole should be figured out and executed. By ignoring strategy and tee placement, amateur golfers are setting themselves up for easier failure.
Take A Side
Specifically we are discussing where one should tee off from in the teeing area. This may sound crazy. After all, the teeing area is only a few feet wide. Perhaps 10 feet or so? What difference could it really make?
If one has any concept of basic geometry, the difference could be huge. When teeing off from one side of the tee box versus another, we must consider that 250-300 yards away the angle of approach to the fairway is much larger.
Before placing a tee in the ground take a look at the hole design. There will be a few possible features on the hole which will help make the side to tee from obvious.
Generally it is widely accepted to tee up on the same side as the trouble, and hit away from it. Take for instance a par-4 hole which has a fairway bunker on the right side of the fairway. From the tee, it would be a good idea to tee the ball up on the far right side and hit “away from” the bunker toward the fat part of the fairway.
Another consideration is the shape of the hole. Consider a par-4 with a sharp dogleg right. Teeing up on the right side of the tee makes the angle much more difficult and essentially makes the landing area smaller. Teeing up on the left side makes the angle easier and makes the landing area wider.
Conclusion
Don’t just tee it up on the tee box without taking a look at the hole design first, then working out a strategy. Start off that strategy and course management by teeing the ball up on the proper side of the tee box!
