Adam Scott had a chance to complete the Australian triple crown. Having won the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Masters, all Scott needed was to win the Australian Open.
Scott was poised to win the triple crown, but a surging Rory McIlory overcame a four shot deficit in the final round and claimed a one shot victory over Scott by making birdie on the final hole. The nearest competitors to Scott and McIlory were a whopping six shots back.
The victory for McIlory was his first in over a year, a year which saw him struggle greatly. There were times when McIlory was so lost that he walked off the course during a round and at one point destroyed a golf club in frustration.
It appears for now that Rory’s confidence and game may be back, as he took on and beat one of the world’s best in Adam Scott this past week.
“I wanted to get a win and finally I've been able to get one. But more satisfying than that is being able to take one of the best players in the world down the stretch and come out on top.”
“Adam is a phenomenal golfer, a great competitor and probably an even better guy and I feel a bit sorry that I was the one that ruined the triple crown for him.” ~Rory McIlroy
