Golf Tips: Improve Driving by Leaving Head Cover On
I stumbled onto this drill about a year ago, and have since noticed it in some golf publications. I have some cool head covers which attach to the club quite firmly. I tried some swings with the head cover on, just to see if it would come off. It was at that point that I noticed the extra weight and what it did to my swing.
Driver Head Cover Drill
Leaving the head cover on the driver adds weight to the head. The extra weight makes it more difficult to start the swing too quickly and to transition at the top of the swing too quickly. Slowing down the takeaway and the transition can really help with the timing of the swing.
The extra weight also prevents the hands from manipulating the head of the club too much, keeping the swing better on plane.
After practicing with the head cover on for a while, take it off. You'll notice the club feels easier to swing and you might even increase your club head speed a bit. Just be sure to try and duplicate the tempo you had when the head cover was on the club.
Note: if your head cover won't stay on the club, use club weights or tie your golf towel (preferably a Frogger Amphibian towel) around the head to add the extra weight.
