PGA Results: 2012 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

Man what a fantastic weekend of golf on the pro tours we had.  For golf fans it doesn't get much better. PGA Tour In last week's weekend preview, I posed three questions about the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.  The first was essentially asking how will Tiger perform.  I'd mentioned that we didn't really know and that we'd have to watch.  Well, if you watched for the first three days, you'd say he was back in form.  But Sunday was an epic collapse, especially considering that the leader through three rounds Charlie Wi started with a double bogey and was four over after six holes.  Tiger missed some five putts under five feet, including two that were around 20 inches.  Tiger hasn't won on the PGA Tour for 2.5 years or so, and until he can put four rounds together, he won't. We wondered about the state of Mike Weir's game too.  Scores of 70, 73 and 78 told the story.  Weir was cut, and there doesn't seem to be any sign that his game will be returning to form any time soon. The 3rd question posed was answered with a great big exclamation point.  How will Phil do?  Phil Mickelson started the day tied with Tiger Woods, four shots behind Charlie Wi.  Combined with Wi's two bogeys and a double, Phil executed a seven shot swing in five holes by making four birdies through the 5th.  Then on the par-5 6th hole he'd make an eagle to reach -5 for the round, solo 1st place.  Stellar putting with saves for par of about 20 and 38 feet contributed to Mickelson's final round 64, beating Woods by 11 shots. With the win, Mickelson claimed his 40th victory on the PGA Tour, passing Tom Watson on the all-time list.  Phil should be a heavy favorite to win the Masters, but he's playing many tournaments before Augusta including this coming week's Northern Trust Open. European Tour Lee Westwood moved up to #2 in the world golf rankings this week following his performance in Dubai at the Dubai Desert Classic.  That's the good news for Westwood.  The bad news is that he brought a lead into the final round yet failed to hold off Rafael Cabrera-Bello for the win. Most troublesome for Westtwood was his final hole, where he had a simple chip shot from greenside.  If he were to get up and down with that simple chip, he could have forced a playoff.  Instead he chipped it some 35-40 feet long and failed to make the putt. Champions Tour Corey Pavin has done a lot in his golf career like captaining the Ryder Cup, winning the U.S. Open, winning 15 times on the PGA Tour etc.  But this past weekend he did something he had never done before, won on the Champions Tour. At the Champions Tour's opening event, the Allianz Championship, Pavin held off a surging Mark Calcavecchia and others to enter a playoff with Peter Senior.  On the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th, Pavin made birdie to Senior's par, sealing his first victory on the over-50 tour. LPGA Tour At Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia, the LPGA Tour kicked of their 2012 season. The competition was so tight that the winner had to be decided in a SIX way playoff.  18 year old Jessica Korda (yes 18), recorded her first victory after making birdie on the first playoff hole after making a 25 foot putt. The six way playoff is a new LPGA record.
