Hold the finish until the ball lands[/caption]
A crucial element of the golf swing is of course, balance. If the balance of the player is off during the swing all sorts of bad things can happen.
If the player's balance is shifted to the back foot as the swing is finishing, this is what's referred to as a reverse-pivot. This is the most common balance issue with amateurs. Problems which result from the balance shifting to the back foot are numerous. It is likely that the ball will be blocked to the right, even sliced. The launch angle of the shot is often too high, causing a distance loss.
If the player's balance is shifted too much to the front foot, equally bad things can happen. Opposite of the reverse pivot, this situation often produces low shots which leak or hook left.
Balance Test
Ever watch Ernie Els or Fred Couples hit shots and admire their high and pretty finishes? Notice how they stay in that pretty finishing position for a long time? That's our test and drill for today.
The weight of the player should shift to the front foot at the end of the swing, but not so much that the player can't hold the finishing position. The drill is to hit the shot and hold the finishing position until the ball hits the ground. Watch the ball and stay in that Els or Couples-like finish until the ball lands, however long that is.
Try it!
