Here's a fun and volatile format which could be used between some betting buddies, or in a tournament. Imagine a stableford format, like we've previously discussed, but with a penalty for bad play which takes points away.
Train
In Train players earn positive points for positive accomplishments on the course as follows:
Par: One Point
Birdie: Two points
Eagle: Four or Five points
Similar to the Stableford, points are scored for positive accomplishments. Dissimilar to the Stableford, a string of two bogeys or one double-bogey will wipe ALL points from the player. Talk about pressure!
Scores could be gross or net, depending on the handicap level of the player.
Settling Up
At the end of the round the player with the most points is declared the winner. There are a couple of ways the bets could be wagered.
A fixed amount could be put into the pot be each player at the beginning of the round, like $5.00. The winner would collect the pot.
A dollar, or fraction of a dollar amount per point could be assigned. In this situation players who score more points than other players would win the most betting units, so there could be more than one winner.
