What would you do if you won the powerball lottery, usually several hundred million dollars? Play a little more golf?
There’s a variation of the scramble format in golf called Powerball. While this game isn’t quite as fun as winning $417 million dollars, it is close.
How It Works
Powerball is played as part of the scramble format, where each member of the team hits a shot from the same location and the best ball is chosen. Then the group plays all of their shots from that location and so on.
The variation is in the Powerball holes. Four times in a round, once for each player on the four-player team, Powerball holes are played. On Powerball holes one player in the group is to tee off from the forward tee. The catch is that the group MUST use the Powerball shot no matter if it is good or bad.
Strategy certainly comes to play heavily in this format. Picking the right player per hole is quite important. If one of the Powerball holes is over water, perhaps the group should pick one of the better players. If the Powerball hole features a wide open fairway with very little trouble, the highest handicap player would be a good choice to tee off.
While not quite as fun as winning $417 million, Powerball can add some excitement to the golf scramble format!
