Here’s a fun variation of the golf scramble format called “Florida Scramble.” This one is also known as “Step Aside” or “Step Aside Scramble.”
First we need to define a regular scramble format. A scramble is a team golf format played with 2-4 players. Each player tees off and the group chooses the best shot of the group to play from. The entire group plays from that position. The best of those shots is chosen again and the process repeats until the hole is finished.
In the Florida Scramble all players tee off as they would in a regular scramble. The twist comes after each shot is chosen. The player whose ball was chosen from the last shot does not play the next shot and is therefore stepping aside
Example
A four player team is playing a scramble on a par-4. All four players tee off. Player A’s drive is the best and the team decides to use that for the 2nd shot. Player A then must sit out for the 2nd shot, so only players B, C and D play it. The group chose Player B’s 2nd shot to play from, so he/she sits out and players A, C and D play the next shot. This process repeats until the hole is finished.
