Women's British Open
The ladies were contesting a major championship this past weekend, the Women's British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Wirral, United Kingdom.
This was a crazy weekend due to the extreme weather conditions. On Friday high winds were blowing golf balls all over greens and off of tees. It would take players many attempts to mark balls on the putting surfaces where they would actually stay put. Eventually play was stopped Friday and all player scores from the 2nd round thrown out. Sunday's final round became a 36 hole marathon.
Jiyai Shink of Korea managed to be the only player under par for this tough event. Shooting -9 for the week, she ran away with her 2nd major championship and 2nd Women's British Open. The nine shot victory is the largest in Women's British Open history. The nearest competitor was Inbee Park at even par. Paula Creamer finished in solo 3rd at +1.
"I said yesterday, my goal was 1-under par every single day. So my goal was 4-under. I think it was enough score. So I'm really surprised even from yesterday and then also today, I hit even par with 36 holes with this weather, so I'm really surprised and inspired by myself. Because really tough course here, so when I finished it today, I'm just like, wow, I can play good score any, any other course, I'm pretty sure of that." ~Jiyai Shin
Champions Tour
The seniors were contesting the inaugural Pacific Links Hawaii Championship in Kapolei, Hawaii at Kapolei Golf Course.
Bill Glasson came into the final round of the championship with a four shot lead, hoping to record his first Champions Tour victory in 47 starts. Glasson increased his lead to five early in the round but suffered five bogeys against three birdies in the final eight holes.
Glasson's stumble allowed for the hot playing Willie Wood to take advantage. Wood fired a 6-under 66 in the final round to overtake Glasson and finish at -14. In 54 holes Wood never recorded a bogey or worse. The Pacific Links Championship victory is Wood's 2nd victory in his last three starts.
"I had a great back nine. I just hung in there and the putts kept continuing to fall, and I got a little bit lucky with the way Bill finished. I knew Bill would have to help us out some." ~Willie Wood
