Golf Games: 8-Man Team
Good Friday Frogger fans. Today we are going to talk about 8-man team games.
I've been fortunate enough to be a decent enough player for my local men's association to ask me to play on the 8-man team. Many associations have these teams, both regular and senior divisions. All the clubs in our area play against each other, with a championship at the end of the year. There are home and away games. The 8-man team is usually 10-12 players, 8 of which actually play on a given week. The other 2-4 are backups or players who rotate in based on whether other players have scheduling issues or can't make a match.
Team Setup
The match ups in 8-man are based on the player's level, 1-8. The #1 player is typically the club pro or an assistant pro from the course. Or the #1 player is the best amateur player.
Players 2-8 are matched up based on ability level or handicap. So for argument a 2 handicap might be put in position 2, while an 8 handicap might be in position 8.
Points
Matches are played as match play contests, nassau format with three possible points to be scored.
Front Nine: 1 point
Back Nine: 1 point
Totals: 1 point
1/2 points are scored for each player if a nine or totals ends in a tie. So if the match is square after nine, each player gets 1/2 point. If player A wins the front 1UP and player B wins the back 1UP that means totals is a tie. So they'd each win 1 point for their win on the nine, plus 1/2 point for totals. Points will always add up to 3.
Check to see if your association has an 8-man team and see if you can join. The competition is intense and the team vibe is a lot of fun. Plus you get to go around a play other courses in the area!
