Golf Tips: Towel Target Drill

Use your golf towel as a short game target[/caption]
Bobby Jones used to throw down towels on the ground in his practice sessions and try to land his shots on them. They helped him improve his accuracy and work on distance control. Fortunately for his caddy it wasn't too tough having to pick them up as Jones barley had any dispersion pattern at all.
Short Game Target
I'm specifically focusing on short game today. For a long time my short game was not terribly good and part of that was because I didn't have a specific target picked out where I wanted my shots to land. As my PGA Pro told me in a short game lesson, it is always good to have a specific spot picked out for landing the ball when chipping or pitching around the green.
Depending on the type of shot (pitch, chip, flop), the landing area will be in a different spot. Once you have the spot picked out, place your golf towel (preferably a Frogger Amphibian Towel) flat on the spot.
Challenge Yourself
Concentrate on the touch needed to land your practice shots on that spot. Try to challenge yourself by picking a number of total balls to hit the towel for each shot you are practicing. Let's say 20. Then pick a percentage of the 20 balls hitting that towel which you think is a good goal. I'll say 75% or 15 out of the 20 balls.
Place the 20 balls down and start to work. Once you've hit that towel 15 times in 20 balls, move to the next position or target.
After a healthy practice session or two of doing this drill, your short game accuracy will greatly improve and you'll start getting up and down more. Even your misplayed shots will likely be more accurate.
