Golf Tips: Putting Speed and Accuracy
There's a training aid you already have in your golf bag which can help you improve your putting stats and knock strokes off your scores. There are probably more of these tools in golf bags than there are golf balls and golf clubs combined. What is this magic golf training aid? The golf tee.
Tee in the green - Accuracy
I use a golf tee not only to hit golf shots, but I use it for training myself on putting distance and accuracy. A way I use a tee to fine tune those elements is to put a tee or some tees in the practice green and put to them. If you can get your puts to hit the tee, you'll think the hole is huge and much easier to hit.
Tee in the green - Distance control
I don't just use the tee for line. If the only goal was to hit the tee in the drill, you could crush the putter on straight lines to the tee. Speed/distance control is even more important than line for the average golfer, and I use a golf tee to help with my speed control.
To get distance control finely tuned, I'll try to stop the golf ball a certain number of inches from the tee without touching it. So if it is a short putt of around three feet or less, I try to get the tee within three inches. I'll imagine a three inch circle around the tee and if the ball ends up there, the distance is perfect and you know that putt would have dropped. For a 10 foot putt within 5-8 inches etc.
It is very challenging to get the ball to come to rest within the circle without having it touch the tee. This can really help increase the focus level.
Depending on the level of accuracy and your ability, you can adjust these numbers in relation to distance to fit your game.
