Golf Tips: Go Fat
I have a challenge for you to try in your next round of golf. You have to really stick to this challenge for all 18 (or 9) holes of your round.
Go Fat
What does "go fat" mean? Eat a lot of bacon before the round? Sounds yummy, but that's not it. By going fat, I mean to aim for the fat or middle of the green. Forget where the pin is and aim for the fatter part of the green, or the middle of the green with your approach shots.
Some Examples
Let's say the pin on the first hole is short right, at 170 yards. The middle of the green is 180 yards. Ignore the pin completely and aim for the middle of the green with your 180 yard club.
For example two we'll say that the pin is tucked on the far left part of the green, very close to the left edge. Pin depth is middle. You're only 118 yards out. Pros may go pin hunting in this situation, but we're going to play our 118 yard shot to the middle or fat of the green, right of the flag. This will hopefully eliminate the chance of missing that left pin left, and being short-sided.
For our last example the pin is on the back of the green, right of center. Distance to the pin is 205. Distance to the back fringe is 210. We will play fat and go for a 195-200 yard shot to the middle of the green. If hit properly, we will eliminate a possible short sided chip from over the green or right of the green.
Try It
Try it and track a few stats if you can. Obviously track your score when playing this way versus playing a more aggressive style. Track your greens in regulation as well. See which numbers are better!
