Golf Tips: 3/4 Swing
With winter approaching and the temperatures dropping, it is harder to make a full swing because the body is a little tighter. All of the layers of clothing to keep me warm in the fall and winter restrict the swing too. So now is the time of year I change to my "winter swing," a 3/4 takeaway. This time of year seems to be the time I realize I should be doing that more than just the winter, because it works so well on several levels.
Accuracy
The biggest advantage to the shorter swing is accuracy. I see an increase in accuracy across the board, but irons especially are noticeably more accurate with the 3/4 swing. I believe that the shorter swing helps the balance because the body weight isn't shifting as much. Unwanted lateral body movement is greatly decreased. The quieter body seems to make it more easy to hit the sweet spot of the golf club.
Loss Of Power?
Naturally one would assume that with a shorter arc in the swing, there would be a loss of power and thus a loss in distance. For my swing at least, this is not the case. The irons and driver go the same distance. But even if there were a few yards lost, it still might be better to gain accuracy for the average player. Hitting from the short grass of the fairway is much better than losing shots from the rough, behind trees or in fairway bunkers.
Try It
Next time you're out on the course, make a conscious effort to shorten your takeaway by 20-25%. It may take a few swings to get the hang of it, but give it a shot. You may find some increased accuracy, which can help lower scores and increase happiness on the course!
