Here's a fun tournament format for larger groups with foursomes as teams called 40 Balls. This format can also be referred to as 40 Scores.
The four players of a team, Players A, B, C & D determine whose shots will be used on each hole. It could be one player, two or however many, as long as the total at the end of 18 holes is 40. The net score of the declared shots is the team's score for that hole. In total, 40 scores, or balls, must be counted. In fairness of the competition, it is often a requirement that all four players in the group must have 10 of their balls counted for the team score. This eliminates one team dominating by only using the score of a very good player.
For example, on the 2nd hole which is a par-3, the team may choose to use 3-4 balls if 3-4 of the players make a par or better. On the 3rd hole, a tough par-4 when only one player makes a par, the team may only use one score.
There are a couple of variations to play this format so lets talk about them.
Before
In the before version, the teams will determine which balls are counted BEFORE the hole is played. There is a lot of strategy and a bit of pressure involved in this format.
After
Obviously in the after version, the teams will use the best score as their ball or balls. The catch with this, if playing the requirement that all four players count 10 of their shots, is that more pressure is added as holes progress for players whose need to have more shots counted toward the end.
