The Netherlands is experiencing a slow rate of building production and as a result, there are lots of open areas which are of very little practical use.
Tasked with making use of some of the open space and a $2500 euro budget, a design firm came up with a brilliant idea: parking lot mini golf.

I'm all over this.
Quote from designboom.com (pardon the lack of captital letters. Its the way their website is formatted):
seeking to activate the large parking lot of the amsterdam harbour club, dutch firm NL architects have designed a putting green, giving people the opportunity to play mini golf - to both 'putt and park'. the project arose from the slow rate of building production in the netherlands, where numerous building sites currently remain unused. this temporary slow-down of construction also has an up-side, similar to the empty spaces in berlin where playgrounds, terraces and 'bottom up' activities were undertaken, the vacant lots in amsterdam also have untapped potential. the car park putting green was the result of 'design as activator', organized by carolien ligtenberg of platform openbare ruimte (POR). the architects were provided with a 2.500 euro budget to investigate how a small intervention could help spark city life and contribute to the temporary use of these left over sites in the city. located next to the popular harbor club in cruquius, the playful design piece integrates into its surroundings, giving visitors to the club the opportunity to have a game of golf before visiting the club. made from an inexpensive material, sod 'grass carpet', the putting green features nine holes, activating the site with this green version of graffiti.

It is particularly cool to see a family with small kids playing the golf course. Perhaps this is what we need to do here in the USA?
