PGA TOUR
WGC-Cadillac Championship
Dates: March 5-8
Venue: Trump National Doral (Blue Monster), Miami, Fla.
This is one of those great weekends where there are TWO events featuring PGA Tour players. This week the World Golf Championships Cadillac is contested in tandem with the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
The WDG-Cadillac is contested at Doral's Blue Monster. Donald Trump now owns the course and had recently had the course redesigned. It would appear that his redesign favors big hitters as coming into the final round three of the biggest hitters in golf were tied for the lead: Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and J.B. Holmes. Holmes had fired a first round 62, -10.
Many crazy things happened this week where Dustin Johnson won, a few starts from his leave of absence from the game. On Saturday both Dustin Johnson and J.B. Holmes scored hole-in-ones on the 207-yard par-3 fourth hole.
And earlier, world #1 Rory McIlory's only headlines were because of his great throw. Following a poor shot he launched his 3-iron into the lake left of the 18th.
A couple of days later a scuba diver recovered the club. Donald Trump personally returned it to McIlory.
PGA TOUR
Puerto Rico Open
Dates: March 5-8
Venue: Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico (Championship Course), Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
John Daly did something he rarely does on the PGA Tour anymore. He carded a top-10 finish. He was up as close as position #2 on the leaderboard at one point as well. A good showing for Daly.
At the end of regulation on this course, like Doral also owned by Trump, five players were tied for the lead: Alex Cejka, Emiliano Grillo, Tim Petrovic, Jon Curran, and Sam Saunders.
The fun that is a five-man playoff ended quickly on the first hole as Alex Cejka carded a birdie for the win. This victory is Cejka's first on the PGA Tour, though he does have four European Tour victories under his belt.
LPGA TOUR
HSBC Women’s Champions
Dates: March 4-8
Venue: Sentosa Golf Club (Serapong Course), Sentosa, Singapore
A fine duel took place at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore between the 2013 Rolex Player of the year Inbee Park, and now #1 in the world 17-year-old Lydia Ko. When the dust settled Park secured a two-stroke victory.
Stacy Lewis recorded a solo finish in third place.
EUROPEAN TOUR
Africa Open
Dates: March 5-8
Venue: East London Golf Club, East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Previous to the Africa Open, 35-year-old South African Trevor Fisher Jnr (yes that is spelled correctly) had only won on the Sunshine Tour, albeit eight times. Fisher Jnr's 9th victory is a little bigger and more important, a European Tour trophy and check for the Africa Open.
England's Matt Ford captured second place, a massive five shots behind Fisher Jnr.
