Northern Trust Open
Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, CA
Riviera Country Club is a scenic golf course, lovely to the eye with tree line holes and some nice elevation change. The course plays as easy for the pros on the PGA Tour as it is to the eye, with the winning score, carded by Bubba Watson, coming in at 15 under par.
On a course that looks tight to the eye, bombers ruled this week. The top two players are two of the biggest hitters in golf, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson.
Bubba Watson’s win this week, by two shots over Dustin Johnson, broke a long winless streak which started after he won the 2012 Masters. To seal the victory, Watson fired two consecutive 64’s on Saturday and Sunday. He made up a four shot deficit in six holes on Sunday.
Dustin Johnson’s second place finish is his second in two weeks.
Champions Tour
ACE Group Classic
TwinEagles GC (Talon Course), Naples, FL
Kirk Triplett needed a clutch six-footer for par on the final hole to avoid going into a four man playoff with Bernhard Langer, Olin Browne, and Duffy Waldorf.
No problem.
The victory marks the third in the short (roughly 1.5 years) Champions Tour career of Triplett.
Admittedly Triplett is not terribly familiar with playing on Bermuda greens, saying “...to win on Bermuda grass is, I think, a little bit of a minor miracle for me.”
European Tour
Africa Open
East London GC, Eastern Cape, South Africa
When the 72nd hole had been finished there were top players atop the Africa Open leader board at -20. Thomas Aiken and Oliver Fisher squared off in a playoff.
The playoff lasted one hole. Aiken drained the winning putt, a 30 foot bomb.
It seemed to be only a matter of time before Aiken found the winner’s circle in 2014, with two other top five finishes in the Joburg Open and the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
