For a while it looked like Rory McIlory would take the Memorial after a blazing hot start, but he cooled off. Then it looked like Bubba Watson and Adam Scott each might take home the Memorial trophy, but those two combined for a back nine of +4 on Sunday. Watson was on his way to his third victory of the year but a shot out of bounds on the par-5 15th hole extinguished that flame.
Hideki Matsuyama made birdie on the 18th hole Sunday, the 4th consecutive time he birdied the hole. That birdie put him in a playoff with Kevin Na. All it took was a par on the first playoff hole to secure the victory for Matsuyama, his first win the PGA Tour.
The list of first-time winners this season on the PGA Tour continues to grow. It is quite a big list.
One distraction during the tournament was the announcement in several news publications that Phil Mickelson was under investigation by the FBI and SEC for insider trading. Mickelson is cooperating and says he did nothing wrong.

Stacy Lewis had the #1 world ranking for a short period in 2013. Inbee Park took that ranking away and held it for 59 weeks.
With her 10th career victory this past weekend at the LPGA Tour’s Shoprite Classic, Lewis is #1 again.
Lewis cruised to victory this week, firing a final round 67 to finish with a six shot margin of victory after starting the final round with a one shot lead.
Champions Tour
Principal Charity Classic
Des Moines, Iowa
When regulation finished at the Principal Charity Classic there were two players tied for the lead at 12-under-par, Tom Pernice Jr. and Doug Garwood. One shot back was a group of contenders including Mark Calcavecchia, Michael Allen, and Bill Glasson.
It took two playoff holes to decide the eventual winner. Both players made par on the first playoff hole. On the second, Pernice rolled in a birdie putt from eight feet to secure his second win of the season and his third in his Champions Tour career.
