Farmers Insurance Open
Torrey Pines, La Jolla, CA
Coming into the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines the golf media was blowing up because this was the first event for Tiger Woods in 2014, and that the two biggest names in golf, Woods and Phil Mickelson, were in the field. The press went on about how Tiger has won this event eight times and Torrey Pines is his playground.
The playground bully just punched Tiger in the nose.
Woods struggled this past weekend. Paired with 20 year old up and comer Jordan Spieth, Woods fired his first round under par for 2014 on Friday, a round of -1. Spieth on the same round fired an astonishing 63. He was apparently not intimidated by the world #1.
Saturday would be a bizarre day for Woods, who would fire a 79 in a round which featured two double bogeys and only five pars. For the first time in his PGA Tour career Woods found himself on the way home after Saturday and not playing Sunday. The Tour implemented a new "made cut but did not finish" tier in the leaderboard, sending some players home before the final round.
The winner of the event, taking home $1,098,000 and 500 FedExCup Points was Scott Stallings. Prior to this win, the best finish this season for Stallings was a tie for 47th place at the CIMB classic in October.
European Tour
Commercial Bank Qatar Masters
Doha GC, Doha Qatar
Sergio Garcia may have found a home on the European Tour. The Spaniard won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters after defeating Mikko Ilonen in a three hole playoff.
With the win Garcia moves to #2 in the Race to Dubai points standings and will crack back into the top 10 in the world golf rankings.
LPGA Tour
Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic
Ocean Club Golf Course
Paradise Island, Bahamas
The par value of 73 at the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic didn't scare the players this week. Scores for this maiden LPGA Tour event of the 2014 season were very low.
Jessica Korda of the USA shot a stellar final round 66 (-7) to claim the first tournament of the young LPGA Tour season. This event marks the second season opener victory for Korda.
