Presidents Cup
Muirfield Village Golf Club
Dublin - Columbus, Ohio
The Presidents Cup is a biennial golf team competition between the top players in the United States and an international team comprised of the top players in the world who are not eligible for the european Ryder Cup team. This means the international team is primarily comprised of players from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Spain and other countries not in Europe.
The competition is formatted similar to the Ryder Cup over a four day period as follows:
Thursday - Six Four-Ball matches
Friday - Six Foursome matches
Saturday morning - five Four-ball matches
Saturday afternoon - Five Foursome matches
Sunday - 12 Singles matches
History
Since 1994 the Presidents Cup had been contested nine times, with the USA team winning seven. The other two consist of an International win and one tie in 2003.
USA Wins 18.5 15.5
Given the history of the event, the USA team was heavily favored to win. But with players like Jason Day and Ernie Els on the International team, that win would not come easy. In the end the USA team finished off the International team as Tiger Woods scored the final winning point on Sunday during the singles matches.
Fred Couples, USA team captain, won his 3rd straight Presidents Cup and became the winningest captain in the history of the event, overtaking Jack Nicklaus who held the old record at 2.5 wins.
Couples decided this was his last captaincy in the Presidents Cup saying, "If someone wants me to be an assistant, I'd love to help out, but a three-peat as captain is good enough for me.”
