The season is very quiet this time of year. Not many big stars are in action and most tours are on vacation.
Thailand Golf Championship
Amata Spring Country Club
A few notables however, contested in the Thailand Golf Championship at Amata Spring Country Club. The Thailand Golf Championship is part of the Asian Tour.
A few notables in the tournament were Charl Schwartzel, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler, and 2013 FedEx Cup winner Henrik Stenson.
Coming into the final round Sunday, Garcia and Stenson were neck and neck. Garcia’s final round 68 was enough to separate him from the 2013 FedEx Cup champion, logging his first victory on any tour since he last won in Malaysia in December of 2012.
Interestingly, Garcia’s caddie for the week was his girlfriend. Perhaps having his lady on the bag is that missing component Garcia needs to win more frequently?
Franklin Templeton Shootout
Tiburon Golf Club
Naples Florida
A non-tour event better known as part of the off season “cash grab” is the Franklin Templeton Shootout in Naples, Florida.
This is a team event where two man teams play alternate shot in the first round, better ball in the second round and a scramble for the third and final round.
Harrish English and Matt Kuchar fired a blistering final round 58 (-14) in the scramble format to overcome Retief Goosen and Freddie Jacobson and collect the $385,000 first place check.
PNC Father/Son Challenge
Ritz-Carlton GC
Orlando, Florida
How would you like to win the father son tournament with your dad? Sounds fun eh? How about collecting a $100,000 check to boot? That’s what Stewart Cink’s son Conner did this weekend at the PNC Father/Son Challenge.
The Cinks finished three shots ahead of nearest teams Steve/Sam Elkington and Qass/Vijay Singh.
