PGA Results: 2012 Zurich Classic
PGA Tour
Fun golf to watch on tv this past week from New Orleans at the Zurich classic. Jason Dufner has been knocking on victory's door for some time. You may recall that Dufner was in two playoffs last year at the waste Management Phoenix Open and the PGA Championship. Unfortunately for Dufner, he lost both of those playoffs.
The hope coming into Sunday for Dufner was that he could hold onto his two shot lead and avoid the playoff curse, but a surging and seemingly revitalized Ernie Els dropped a 67 in the final round to force a playoff at -19. Both players made par on the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th. On the second playoff hole, once again the 18th, Dufner reached in two and made an easy two-putt birdie. Els had some trouble off the tee and struggled to get his 3rd shot to the fringe, where he'd miss his birdie attempt.
Dufner finally notches his first PGA Tour victory and collects about $1.1 million in prize money. Just in time, he's financing his own wedding which is coming up soon.
New #1
Another player who shot 67 on Sunday was then former world #1 Luke Donald. Donald needed a top-5 finish to move back into the #1 spot over Rory McIlory and the Sunday 67 put him in solo 3rd. We have a new and returning #1, again.
LPGA Tour
Stacey Lewis came into the final round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic with a two shot lead. It looked to be an easy Sunday stroll for Lewis after her head grew to five strokes following birdies on the first two holes. But the tournament got interesting as Lewis had to hold off a very hot and surging Lexi Thompson (17 years old) who fired an impressive 7-under 65.
In the end, Lewis's final round 69 was enough for a one shot victory, the second in her career. The win moved her up to #9 in the Rolex Rankings.
