Steve Stricker wins season opener at Kapalua
As I predicted in
yesterday's post, nobody was able to overtake Steve Stricker and the five shot lead he brought into the final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii. Despite a Stricker-like point in time in the first 3rd of the final round where it looked like he may once again give up a lead after making bogey on #6, birdies on #8 and #9 helped him relax and stay ahead.
Highlights of Stricker's four rounds include 26, count 'em,
26 birdies and one eagle. Stricker's 2nd round was fantastic. On this par-73 track, the only one on the PGA Tour, Stricker had no bogeys on the card and fired a sizzling 63, 10 under par.
"I put a lot of time in revamping my swing back at the end of '05, and it's just been a progression. And some good things have happened to me along the way. I've got confidence that I can play well, and winning helps with that confidence, obviously. It's been a process.
I still feel like my skills are just as good as they were two, three years ago. So I come each year still with that confidence from the year before, and I feel like I can still compete." ~Steve Stricker on what it has taken to get to this point in his career
The PGA Tour stays in the Hawaiian islands for one more week for the Sony Open. Stricker will be in the field.
New Hank Haney Book
In other interesting golf news, Hank Haney has announced that he will have a new book coming out at the end of March. The book, titled "
One Big Miss," will tell the story of the six years he spent coaching Tiger Woods. That six year period covered many wins, majors and of course the scandal.
"I think there's a lot of things that people are going to find interesting." ~Hank Haney on what will be covered in the new book
