It is the final Monday before Christmas, and there's still worldwide professional golf taking place with some highly ranked and notable players competing. Despite the notables, most golf outlets like the PGA and European Tour web sites don't even have final leader boards posted. Yes, it is the "off" season.
Thailand Golf Championship
In Bangkok Thailand the Thailand Golf Championship took place this past weekend. The hottest December golfer is no doubt Lee Westwood, who notched his 2nd win this month at the Thailand Golf Championship, the first win being the Nedbank Challenge a couple of weeks ago. The nearest competitor, who wasn't all that close, was 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel who was a massive seven shots behind.
Westwood is working on his game and fitness in preparation for joining the PGA Tour full time in 2012:
I’m going to continue to work on my fitness and all aspects of my game. I’m going in the right direction. I can see a lot of improvement and I’m happy with the way I’ve finished the year. I’ve won two out of my last three events.
I’ll go into the winter with a lot of confidence and I’ll try to come out next year playing the same kind of golf as I played this week, a little bit leaner and well rested. ~Lee Westwood
Australian Masters
Meanwhile down under, some other big name pro golfers were in the field at the Australian Masters. The tournament featured world players Luke Donald, Ian Poulter and Matteo Manasserro, but was 95% Australian with the biggest name of that group being Geoff Ogilvy.
Ian Poulter and Geoff Ogilvy dueled the whole weekend but in the end two bogeys on the final nine for Ogilvy cost him his chances for a win. Poulter held off surging Australian Marcus Fraser (64) for a three shot victory.
Poulter's first comments following his victory could be read on Twitter:
"winner winner chicken dinner ... what a way to finish the year."
Omega Dubai Ladies Masters
Last but not least is an amazing story. 16 year old Lexi Thompson, who just acquired her LPGA Tour card for 2012, won the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. Lexi now holds the distinction of being the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour (Navistar LPGA Classic) and the youngest winner on the Ladies European Tour. What will 2012 hold for her? Good things is my guess.
