"I haven't had a seven-shot lead since '92 or '90 or whenever the heck it was. I probably may never ever get another one. It's a weird feeling, and I was kind of unnerved. But once we got to the back nine I played much better and I pulled away to a lead that was plenty."Couples's seven shot victory is the largest winning margin on the Champions Tour for 2011 and moves him up from 11th to 8th in Charles Schwab Cup points.
PGA Results: 2011 PGA Tour and Champions Tour
It was a very entertaining weekend of golf both on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. One finish was tight and unexpected, while another was a blowout.
PGA Tour
Ben Crane is known for slow play and his funny self made videos in which he makes fun of his slow play. Now he can be known as the 2011 McGladrey Classic Champion as he dropped an amazing final round 63 and came from way back in the field to win. But he did have to weather a two man, two hole playoff first, between himself and now #1 on the money list Webb Simpson.
Amazingly, Crane nearly withdrew from the tournament Thursday because of an ailing hip. Even more amazing is that he was seven shots out of the lead after his 11th hole on Sunday. Quite a charge.
The young Bud Cauley, Nationwide Tour player, finished high up on the leaderboard again this week with a tie for 15th. That should easily secure enough earnings for 2011 to net him exempt status on the PGA Tour for 2012. Cauley joins an elite group of players who have made the jump straight from college to the Tour, Tiger Woods being one of them.
Champions Tour
Bad back and sneaker like golf shoes in tow, Presidents Cup Captain Fred Couples obliterated the field this past weekend in San Antonio at the Champions Tour AT&T Championship. With rounds of 65, 62 and 66, Couples lapped the field by seven strokes.
