U.S. Open
Chambers Bay
University Place, Washington
What a weekend this is going to be with the U.S. Open taking place at a course which is only eight years old, Chambers Bay. The star this week may be a big name golfer, but it just might be the golf course. Chambers Bay has quickly become the talk of the golf world, for good and bad reasons. Some Tour players are critical of Robert Trent Jones II's design, while others are embracing the links-style architecture. The course will play hard and fast, with all sorts of unpredictable bounces. In typical U.S. Open fashion, the player who hits the most fairways and greens will likely take home America's championship.
There are many storylines to watch as naturally every big name in the world of golf will be in action, from Tiger Woods to Rory McIlory to Jordan Spieth. Who has the game to conquer Chambers Bay? Perhaps nobody. It might end up being a war of attrition. There are several par-4 holes over 500 yards and par-5's over 600 yards. Bombers will have an advantage, but only if they can hit it straight.
One storyline is that of Phil Mickelson, who yesterday celebrated a birthday. Mickelson holds the record for most 2nd place finishes in the U.S. Open. More than Jack Nicklaus. More than anyone. With a win at Chambers Bay Mickelson, already a Hall of Fame member, will cement his place in history with a career grand slam.
Then there's the story of the darkhorse players who come in under the radar. Will a no-name golfer have the nerve and the game to last four days under the highest pressure in golf?
