Golf Tips: Aim Long Over Trouble
Average Yards Per Club VS Best Yards Per Club
We tend to forget some of the most basic concepts when on the course. We too often calculate yardages to targets, or yardages over areas based on our best shot. We play that 170 yard shot for our best 170 strike, say a 6-iron. But how often do we really hit it perfect? Even PGA Tour pros expect to mis-hit 1-2 out of five times. As amateurs we may hit the sweet spot 1-2 out of five times.
Based on the fact that we know we don't always hit it perfect, why calculate yardages to a target or say over trouble on our best contact.
Aim Long Over Trouble
Say we have a par-4 where the tee shot is over a lake. The more aggressive carry over the lake is 230 yards. A less aggressive line has a carry of 200 yards. On a great day we may hit the driver with a carry of 230. So why take the chance with the aggressive carry? Taking a less aggressive approach will practically guarantee that we stay dry and score well.
Here's a great saying to remember when hitting over trouble or hazards, "when playing over a hazard one can play one more club or two more balls."
