Looking out the window today at rain. It has been raining now for two days. The subject of rain brings up a fun golf game called umbrella. Though it has the name umbrella, the game has nothing to do with rain or the weather.
Umbrella is two-player team game. It is a game of "achievements" which all have point values assigned to them for individual as well as team combined scoring. Scoring an achievement means scoring a point value for the team. At the end of the round, the team with the most points wins the bet.
Example Achievements
1 point for low individual score
1 point for the team with the lowest 2-ball total score
1 point for an individual green in regulation
1 point if the playing partner hits the green in regulation
1 point if either team member makes a birdie
If a team scores all five achievements they score an umbrella. The points are doubled as a bonus.
The Catch
The number of points available per achievement is based on the hole number. Therefore, the above list of achievements is valid for the first hole. On the second hole, the same achievements would be worth two points each. On the third hole, three points each. On the 18th hole, 18 points each.
Example for hole #14
14 points for low individual score
14 points for the team with the lowest 2-ball total score
14 points for an individual green in regulation
14 points if the playing partner hits the green in regulation
14 points if either team member makes a birdie
70 total points available. 140 points scored if a team scores an umbrella.
With numbers exponentially growing like that, the game can be a bit tedious to score. Scoring can be quite wild and it is best to keep the score updated on each hole.
