Here's a fun golf game to try this weekend called The Train. The Train is typically a side betting game, but could also be the primary game of the group. The Train promotes and accentuates good play, but bad play can wipe out the good. Lets take a look.
Positive
Accentuating the positive parts of the game, The Train rewards good play with points in the following fashion, similar to a Chicago style points system:
- Par = 1 point
- Birdie = 2 points
- Eagle = 5 points
Depending on the playing ability level of the competitors, points can be awarded for gross or net scores. For instance, a group of 20+ handicappers are not going to score many points with their gross scores, so basing points off of net is the best option.
Negative
Points continue to accrue through the round. However if the golfer was to score two bogeys or worse in two consecutive holes, ALL points are erased and the golfer starts over at zero points.
Bets
A predetermined betting amount per point, like $1 per point, can be determined at the beginning of the round. Another option is to have each contestant put in a fixed dollar amount into the pot and the golfer with the most points collects the pot at the end of the round.
