Golf Games: Stymie Putting Game
A fun game to play when waiting for a tee time on the practice green is the Stymie game. The more players, the better (or more expensive) the game becomes.
The original stymie was an aspect in golf which was abolished in the early 50's. The essential situation is that one person's ball could block another's ball on the putting green. The ball which is blocking wasn't marked and the other player had to go around or over the ball in his line.
Stymie Putting Game
Pick a starting player by throwing the tee or flipping coins. The starting player picks the start location and hole the group must play to.
Group members count their strokes.
Balls are not marked and can impede other player's putts. If one players ball strikes another, a penalty stroke is assessed.
Bets are usually a specified dollar or cent amount per stroke. So if player "A" gets a 4, and the rest of the group scores a 3, Player A owes each of the group one bet increment.
This game can get intense, and costly the more players there are. We had one guy lose $96 in one round at a dollar a hole with 10 players!
Stymies are good putting practice, especially forcing the player to perform or pay up!
