There are so many side bets in golf it could take years to cover them all! Some side bets are actually great for increasing the competition level, increasing player focus, and bettering core statistics in game management. Case in point is the game "Polee."
There can be many variations on the Polee game, but here's the core. The word "pole" is the key, also meaning the flagstick. Bets/games are based on proximity to the hole, specifically whether approach shots finish within the length of the flagstick and whether putts are made outside the flagstick. Here's how some of those games may go:
Approach Proximity
Approach shots on any hole, or perhaps par-3's depending on the group's preference, win a Polee bet if they finish on the green within the length of the flagstick. So if a player were to hit three approach shots within that distance in the course of the round, he/she would win three betting units. Bet units are agreed to before the round, typically one dollar.
Made Putt Length
A putt-polee is scored when a player makes a putt outside of the length of the flagstick. The group may place a limit on these however, requiring that the made putts be for par or better.
Conclusion
These games help the player focus on proximity for approaches as well as speed and accuracy putting. And if played well, they can be profitable!
